Helpful AI Tips

Small habits that make AI dramatically more useful.

5 minute read

Tip 1: Give it a role

Starting your request with 'Act as a...' noticeably improves answers. 'Act as a patient technology teacher' or 'Act as an experienced travel planner' tells the AI what kind of expert to be and what tone to take. It is the single easiest upgrade to any request.

Tip 2: Say how you want the answer

Tell the AI the shape of the answer you want: 'as numbered steps,' 'in one short paragraph,' 'as a table,' 'in a list I can print.' You will stop getting walls of text and start getting answers you can actually use.

Tip 3: Ask for one step at a time

For anything technical, add this magic sentence: 'Give me one step at a time, and wait for me to say done before the next step.' The AI becomes a patient tutor sitting beside you instead of a manual dumped in your lap.

Tip 4: Ask it to ask you questions

When you are not sure what details matter, flip the job around: 'Ask me questions one at a time until you have what you need, then give me your answer.' This works beautifully for trip planning, gift ideas, writing projects, and anything else with lots of moving parts.

Tip 5: Use your voice

If typing is uncomfortable, you do not have to type. The ChatGPT phone app has a microphone button: tap it and just talk. Many people find speaking their request feels far more natural than typing, and the AI does not mind rambling.

Tip 6: Save what works

When a request gets you a great result, save it: copy it into a note, or print it. A personal collection of five or six proven prompts covers most of daily life. Our Prompt Library gives you 50 to start with.
