What is AI?

A plain-English introduction to Artificial Intelligence. No jargon, no hype.

The short answer

AI stands for Artificial Intelligence. It is computer software that has been trained to do things that used to require a person, like writing, answering questions, summarizing information, and making suggestions.

You have probably used AI for years without knowing it. When your email sorts out junk mail, when your phone finishes your sentence, or when Netflix suggests a movie, that is AI at work.

How does it work?

Modern AI tools learn by reading enormous amounts of text: books, articles, websites. From all that reading, they learn patterns in how people write and explain things. When you ask a question, the AI uses those patterns to write a helpful answer, one word at a time.

A good comparison: it is like a very well-read assistant with a remarkable memory. It has read more than any person ever could, and it is very good at explaining what it knows in plain language. But like any assistant, it is not perfect and it sometimes makes mistakes.

What can it do for you?

Today's AI assistants can help you write letters and emails, plan trips, explain confusing paperwork, suggest recipes from what is in your fridge, help you research your family history, and patiently answer questions about almost anything.

The best part: you talk to it in ordinary English. You do not need to learn commands or codes. If you can type a sentence or speak into your phone, you can use AI.

What it is not

AI is not a person, and it does not think or feel. It is not always right, so important facts should be double-checked. And it is not going to replace your own judgment; it works best as a helpful assistant while you stay in charge of the decisions.

Our AI Assistant builds the perfect request for you, one simple question at a time.
